Iowa sports betting handle doubles year-on-year in January

Bettors in Iowa staked $303.3m in the first month of 2022, meaning handle more than doubled year-on-year.

Amounts wagered for January was up 102.9% from January 2021’s $149.5m total figures from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission show.

This was driven entirely by mobile betting, with customers staking $275.9m during the month, a 128.4% jump.

Retail, on the other hand, actually declined from January 2021, with stakes down 4.5% to $27.5m.

Caesars led the way in terms of handle, with customers staking $112.7m through its mobile sportsbook, setting it ahead of DraftKings which reported $68.9m in mobile stakes, and FanDuel on $44.1m.

For retail, it was the FanDuel sportsbook at the Diamond Jo Worth Casino that led the way, with $8.7m staked. Penn National’s Ameristar II in Council Bluffs followed with customers wagering $5.4m at its Barstool Sportsbook, and the Caesars Sportsbook at Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs on $3.9m.

BetMGM launches inaugural regulated Puerto Rico sports betting platform

BetMGM, in conjunction with Casino del Mar, has launched Puerto Rico's first regulated sports betting platform at the casino's La Concha resort.

As of today BetMGM is accepting wagers at the San Juan-based resort through 12 betting kiosks and five betting windows. BetMGM also plans to open a retail sportsbook in addition to launching a mobile app later in the year.

The operator first entered into its strategic partnership with Casino del Mar back in September 2021, with a view to executing today’s sports betting launch.

BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt said: “This is a monumental day for BetMGM as it marks the launch of our first operation outside of the US mainland. Casino del Mar delivers exceptional guest experiences and is an ideal partner as we look to extend our brand in Puerto Rico.”

The sports betting launch forms the latest part of Puerto Rico’s expansion of its gaming industry.

South Dakota mobile sports betting bill passes at Senate

A bill proposing the legalisation of mobile sports wagering in South Dakota has been passed in the state's Senate.

Senate Joint Resolution 502 is set to be introduced during South Dakota’s next general election, allowing citizens the chance to vote on whether it should come to pass. The proposal was passed by a slim majority – 18 votes to 17.

Should the proposal be voted in at the general election, players will be able to place mobile wagers on sporting events, provided the platform is partnered with one of the casinos in the city of Deadwood.

The legislation stipulates that any proceeds from games of chance should be used for educational, charitable, patriotic, religious, or other public spirited uses – which include the historic restoration and preservation of Deadwood. The resolution will also allow for a state-run lottery and video games of chance.

IBIA receives 236 suspicious bet alerts in 2021 as football alerts hit record high

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has received 236 suspicious betting alerts in 2021, with football reporting a record 66 alerts for the sport.

The overall number represents a 13% decrease on 2020’s figure, when 270 suspicious cases were flagged. The alerts spanned 13 sports across 49 countries.

69 alerts were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2021, following on from the 65 recorded in the third quarter.

Tennis produced the most alerts of any sport with 80, down from the 98 recorded in 2020. The 66 football alerts represented am 8% increase on the figure reported for 2020.

Table tennis added a further 40 alerts, with esports contributing 30, basketball seven and volleyball six. Ice hockey, beach volleyball, squash, horseracing, futsal, cricket and handball all added a single alert each.

Mississippi reports marginal growth betting handle for December

Mississippi's casinos reported total sports betting stakes of $56.8m for December 2021, a 2.8% year-on-year increase.

This, however represented a 6.2% month-over-month decline.

During December, the vast majority was staked in the state’s coastal casinos, which made up $37.5m of the total.

A further $10.7m was wagered at properties in Mississippi’s central region, with a further $8.7m staked in casinos in the north of the state.

American football proved to be the most popular sport to bet on across the state, with $24.9m being staked on the sport. Basketball followed with $15.5m, while parlay bets totaled $10.4m. Other bets added $6.1m.

After player winnings, evenue for the month amounted to $3.2m, down 59.0% from 2020 and a decrease of 66.3% compared to November.

The coastal region was the biggest contributor to the revenue total, generating $2.2m. The northern region was next with $553,536, followed by the central region with $496,568.
