FanDuel withdraws daily fantasy product from Ontario

FanDuel will withdraw its daily fantasy sports product from Ontario from 1 April, in line with the Canadian province’s regulations for when its online betting and gaming market opens to licensed operators.

Ontario is set to launch licensed sports betting and igaming on 4 April, ending a state monopoly. Earlier this month, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) released a guide for operators that revealed that businesses which apply for registration before the 4 April launch must cease operations in Ontario from the moment their registration is approved by AGCO.

FanDuel is among the operators that has received a licence, and as a result it has opted to withdraw its daily fantasy sports brand, including both free and paid games, as this vertical is not permitted under the new regime.

The operator did note, however, that its daily fantasy sports brand would still be available in other provinces.

FanDuel expands sports betting into Wyoming

Flutter Entertainment-owned FanDuel Group has extended the reach of its sports betting offering by launching its mobile sportsbook product in Wyoming.

Players in the state can place a range of wagers on professional and college sports such as football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, mixed martial arts, boxing, soccer and tennis.

Other features on the FanDuel Sportsbook app include Same Game Parlay Plus, where players can combine Same Game Parlay bets from one game with bets from other games.

Wyoming becomes the 15th US state in which the FanDuel Sportsbook app has gone live, following launches in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Sports betting was legalised in Wyoming in April last year after Governor Mark Gordon signed House Bill 0133 into law. Its market then launched on September 1.

Iowa sports betting handle doubles year-on-year in January

Bettors in Iowa staked $303.3m in the first month of 2022, meaning handle more than doubled year-on-year.

Amounts wagered for January was up 102.9% from January 2021’s $149.5m total figures from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission show.

This was driven entirely by mobile betting, with customers staking $275.9m during the month, a 128.4% jump.

Retail, on the other hand, actually declined from January 2021, with stakes down 4.5% to $27.5m.

Caesars led the way in terms of handle, with customers staking $112.7m through its mobile sportsbook, setting it ahead of DraftKings which reported $68.9m in mobile stakes, and FanDuel on $44.1m.

For retail, it was the FanDuel sportsbook at the Diamond Jo Worth Casino that led the way, with $8.7m staked. Penn National’s Ameristar II in Council Bluffs followed with customers wagering $5.4m at its Barstool Sportsbook, and the Caesars Sportsbook at Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs on $3.9m.
