Genius Sports appoints former UK Minister to advisory role

Genius Sports has appointed former UK Minister for Sport and the London Olympics Sir Hugh Robertson as advisor to the company.

In his role, which he begins with immediate effect, Robertson will work with Genius Sports’ business advisory council, helping to identify strategic development opportunities and utilise his previous experience.

Before his new appointment, Robertson took on the role of Minister of Sport and the London Olympics in 2010. Following this he became Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, where he was responsible for the Middle East, North Africa and counter-terrorism.

Robertson left politics in 2015 and is currently chairman of National Lottery operator Camelot and the British Olympic Association.

Racing Victoria selects Jones as next CEO

Racing Victoria has named sporting industry veteran Andrew Jones as its new chief executive, starting on 11 July.

Jones (pictured) is currently the interim chief executive of Netball New South Wales. He has also served as chief executive of Cricket New South Wales from 2013 to 2019 and interim chief executive of news site Racing.com.

Before this, he was general manager of strategy at Cricket Australia from 2010 to 2012, overseeing the launch of the Big Bash League in this role.

“The Board is delighted to appoint Andrew Jones to the position of chief executive and we look forward to his commencement later this year,” Racing Victoria chairman Brian Kruger said.

Betsson to reshuffle board with three new appointments

Betsson’s nomination committee has proposed Eva de Falck, Louise Nylén and Tristan Sjöberg as new board members.

In addition, the committee proposed Johan Lundburg as chairman, as previously announced, as well as the re-election of Eva Leach, Peter Hamberg and chief executive Pontus Lindwall to the board.

Tristan Sjöberg had previously served on Betsson’s board for six months in 2018. However, he stepped down at the time because he was “in a legal dispute with Swedish tax authorities regarding tax liability”.

He is vice chairman of the TCSJohnHuxley Group and co-owner of Knutsson Holdings. He is considered an “active owner” of Betsson, as Knutsson is the operator’s fourth-largest shareholder, and so he will represent these interests on the board.

Annamarie Phelps steps down as BHA chair

Annamarie Phelps CBE, the chair of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), has announced she will be stepping down when her term ends.

After a career in British rowing including an appearance at the Olympic Games, Phelps took on the role in June 2019 after working for a variety of governing bodies within the industry. The announcement comes on the eve of Cheltenham Festival.

Phelps said: “It has been a great privilege to lead the BHA during this challenging period for the sports sector, and to have recruited a fantastic CEO in Julie Harrington. I am immensely proud of what racing has achieved collectively in this time.”

She added that she was proud of the organisation for the way it handled a number of major challenges, including the COvid-19 pandemic, while she was chair.

CDI to drop online betting and igaming businesses in 2022

Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has revealed that it will abandon its online sports betting and online gaming business within the next 6 months, in what it described as the “next step forward” for the company.

The news came as part of an earnings call for CDI’s 2021 financial results. Its online product TwinSpires – which includes horse racing as well as sports betting and igaming – brought in $431.7m in total revenue for the year. However, TwinSpires also accounted for $325.4m in costs.

Bill Carstanjen, CEO of CDI, explained that the company’s sports betting and online gaming business had not performed as expected, emphasising the competitiveness of the space.
