Kindred enters Washington State with Swinomish Tribe

Kindred Group has expanded into the Washington State market by launching the first phase of its partnership with The Swinomish Tribe.

Under the agreement, Kindred will roll out a retail operation at the Swinomish Casino & Lodge, in line with a wider, six-year deal announced in October last year.

The first phase of the sportsbook launch covers Unibet branded kiosks and over-the-counter sports betting, with further developments to include a Unibet sports betting lounge, due to launch later this year.

Kambi scores multi-channel sports betting deal with Wisconsin tribal operator

Sports betting technology supplier Kambi Group has agreed a new multi-channel sportsbook partnership with tribal operator Potawatomi Casinos & Hotels in Wisconsin.

Under the deal, Kambi will support Potawatomi Casino Hotel in Milwaukee with the opening of the first land-based sportsbook in the state. The new facility will feature 20 self-service kiosks, while additional kiosks will also open at the Carter Hotel & Casino in Carter.

Kambi’s full suite of sports betting technology and services will be available to customers for Potawatomi Casino Hotel’s initial retail sportsbook launch, with an on-premises mobile roll out, including live odds boards and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) technology, to follow.

888 approved for Hannahville tribe online casino partnership in Michigan

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has approved 888’s VHL Michigan subsidiary as the new platform provider for the Hannahville Indian Community’s internet casino website.

Under the arrangement, VHL Michigan will support the tribe, which operates the Island Resort and Casino, with its igaming site that runs under the Sports Illustrated brand.

The deal came about after Churchill Downs Incorporated’s TwinSpires B2B sports betting business, the original platform provider for both online casino gaming and internet sports betting to the Hannahville tribe, withdrew from the agreement last July.

Gaming bill filed as Texas gears up for 2023 legislative session

The Texas legislature will consider a bill that would amend the state’s constitution to legalize casinos at a limited number of locations and set the stage to permit sports betting.

The proposed law – Senate Joint Resolution 17 – would devise the framework for a new body named the Texas Gaming Commission, which would supervise legalized gambling in Texas.

Casino gambling would be authorized at a “limited number of destination resorts and facilities” with the proceeds going towards tax relief and funding for education and public safety.

The amendment’s author is Houston-based state senator Carol Alvarado, a Democrat who initially pre-filed the bill on 14 November 2022.

Kahnawake council launches legal challenge against Ontario igaming laws

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawàke (MCK) has launched a constitutional challenge against iGaming Ontario and the attorney-general of Ontario, arguing that the province’s regulation of gambling is unconstitutional.

The Council – which runs its own gambling licensing regime – said that the Ontario regime did not meet the requirements for gambling outlined in Canada’s constitution.

As a result, it has filed a motion in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to challenge the legality of Ontario’s igaming framework, which it said was “illegal and unconstitutional”.

Commercial betting and gaming are legal in Canada only if it is “conducted and managed” by a provincial government. While in most provinces that offer online gambling, the government runs a monopoly, Ontario instead launched a licensed regime this year, with more than 30 different licensed operators so far.

California Democrats endorse “no” vote on online betting measure

The California Democratic Party has recommended that those in the state vote against a proposal that would legalise online betting.

The party – which dominates California elections, having controlled both houses of the state legislature since 1996 – announced its official list of endorsements for ballot measures that will appear in the 2022 November election.

That election will include two ballot measures related to sports betting. Tribe-backed Proposition 26, titled the California Legalize Sports Betting on American Lands Initiative. would allow for retail sports betting only on tribal lands.

Minnesota tribal sports betting bill passed by House

A bill that would allow online sports betting to be governed by Minnesota’s 11 federally recognised Native American tribes has been passed by the state’s House.

House Bill 778 was passed after its third reading on May 12, following an amendment. It was first introduced on February 4 2021, initially allowing both tribal and commercial betting.

It was adopted by the Committee for Finance and Policy in March this year, along with House Bill 167, which initially focused on sentencing hearings. Both bills were amended to permit sports betting to be operated by the state’s tribes.

Connecticut sports betting and igaming revenue both decline in February

Gross gaming revenue from online casino in Connecticut came to $17.2m, down 8.5% from January, while sports betting revenue hit its lowest total for a full month since launching.

Gross gaming revenue is calculated after promotions are deducted. Before these deductions, revenue was $21.6m, down 3.6%.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation – which operates Foxwoods Casino and partnered with DraftKings for online betting and gaming – continued to lead the way in gross online casino revenue, bringing in $13.7m. The tribe made a further $46,953 in revenue from mobile-on-reservation gaming, with its own Foxwoods-branded app.

Meanwhile, the Mohegan Tribe – which partnered with FanDuel – brought in $7.8m in gross revenue.

The combined online casino revenue came on $743.9m worth of stakes, with $493.6m staked with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and $249.5m with Mohegan.

In addition, players staked $17.2m worth of promotional credits with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and $1.0m with Mohegan.

IGT expands in Washington state with Kalispel Tribe deal

International Game Technology (IGT) has signed a multi-year agreement with the Kalispel Tribe of Indians which will see the company expand its sports betting offering to Washington state.

Under the terms of the deal, the Tribe’s Kalispel Casino will use IGT’s technology to power a retail sportsbook, which is due to open at a later date.

IGT first entered the Washington sports betting market in July 2021 via its partnership with Snoqualmie Casino. The company went on to reach a similar agreement with the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians and their Angel of the Winds Casino Resort in September.
