PointsBet confirms North American sales talks

Australian gaming operator PointsBet confirmed that the business is “currently in discussion with multiple parties” regarding the sale of its North American business.

The company also said that it has terminated previously reported talks to sell its Australian business to the News Corp-backed gaming venture behind the Betr brand. Despite this, PointsBet said it remains in discussion with “other third parties” who have expressed interest in acquiring the business.

“Consistent with commentary previously provided to our investors and the market more generally, PointsBet continues to engage in discussions regarding strategic transactions that offer the potential to add value for our shareholders,” said the company.

PointsBet opens new retail sportsbook in Illinois

Sports betting operator PointsBet has extended its reach in Illinois with the launch of a new retail sportsbook in the Villa Park area of Chicago.

Located inside the Crazy Pour Sports Bar at Club Hawthorne, the facility is PointsBet’s fourth retail location in the state and will be operated through its partnership with Hawthorne Race Course.

Customers can place cash wagers directly with cashiers at three betting windows or at eight self-service kiosks, while visitors will also have access to Crazy Pour’s full-service beverage and dining options.

PointsBet nominates new non-executive director to board

PointsBet has nominated William Grounds to its board as an independent non-executive director, in line with its recent activity in the US market.

Grounds previously served as president and chief operating officer of Infinity World Development Corp, an affiliate of Dubai World. Here, he headed up the $7bn (£5.69bn/€6.64bn) investment in CityCenter Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with joint venture partner MGM Resorts International.

He also served as a non-executive director of MGM Resorts International between 2013 and 2021. In this time, the BetMGM venture with Entain was formed after the repeal of PASPA. MGM said this gave Grounds a deep understanding of the igaming market with experience in ongoing governance and oversight of strategy and execution.

He has also been licensed in a number of jurisdictions in the United States.

BetMGM and PointsBet cleared to launch in Ontario

iGaming Ontario, the subsidiary of Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), has announced BetMGM and PointsBet as the latest operators to secure online gambling licences in the Canadian province.

BetMGM will operate through BetMGM.ca in Ontario, while PointsBet will be active via the PointsBet.ca website.

Each of the licences will run from the day the market opens through to 3 April 2024.

Ontario’s regulated online gambling market will officially launch on 4 April, with iGaming Ontario having been given the responsibility to oversee all igaming operations in the province.

In recent weeks, iGaming Ontario has issued licences to a host of operators in preparation for the market opening.

These include Bet365, Flutter Entertainment-owned FanDuel, Unibet and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.

PointsBet partners with NBC Sports for landmark dual-market telecast

PointsBet has partnered with media broadcaster NBC Sports to debut its BetCast platform, a duel-market sports betting telecast to be split accros Chicago and Philadelphia.

The first ever BetCast will cover the NBA fixture between the Chicago Bulls and the Philadelphia 76ers, with the live game coverage spread across NBC Chicago and NBC Philadelphia.

PointsBet will supply live on-screen odds data in addition to future odds and player props. Viewers will also have access to PointsBet’s ‘Live Same Game Parlay’ options, giving them the opportunity to place bets while tracking odds, player performance, and team stats in-real time.

The BetCast will also feature alternate commentators to provide a sports betting focus. These include NBC Sports EDGE host Sara Perlman, NBC Sports Philadelphia’s 76ers analyst Jim Lynam, NBC Sports Chicago’s Bulls analyst Kendall Gill and PointsBet’s head oddsmaker Jay Croucher.

PointsBet revenue doubles, but losses also grow, in Q2

Betting and igaming operator PointsBet’s total revenue doubled year-on-year to $90.4m in the quarter ended 31 December 2021, thanks to US growth and the addition of betting supplier Banach Technology, but losses continued to grow.

The quarter was the second of PointsBet’s 2021-22 financial year.

In total, PointsBet took in sports bets worth AUD$1.33bn in Q2, up 11.1% from the second quarter of 2020-21.
The majority of this total came from Australia, where revenue was up 33.6% to AUD$727.0m.
In the US, meanwhile, revenue was down by 9.2% to AUD$598.9m.

PointsBet revealed that during the quarter it held a 7.4% sports betting market share in the state of Illinois, 5.1% in Michigan, 3.5% in Colorado, 3.1% in New Jersey, 2.8% in Indiana, 2.3% in Iowa and 1.4% in West Virginia.
