FuboTV appoints Ahn as first chief business officer

Sports streaming service and betting operator FuboTV has appointed Henry Ahn to the newly created role of chief business officer.

Based in New York City, Ahn will oversee FuboTV’s content strategy and licensing, as well as business development. He will report directly to FuboTV co-founder and chief executive David Gandler.

Ahn will transition from his current role on FuboTV board of directors in order to take on the new position. He has been a member of the FuboTV board since July 2020.

Ahn previously spent more than two-and-a-half years as president of distribution and content partnerships at Univision Communications, while he also spent almost seven years as president of content distribution and marketing for Scripps Network Interactive.

His other roles have included executive vice president of TV networks distribution for NBC Universal, senior vice president of affiliates sales at NBCU Cable Networks and director finance and administration at NBC Cable.

KSA chair: Dutch online market may be smaller than expected

René Jansen, chair of Dutch regulator de Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), said that early data suggests the country’s online gambling market may be smaller than initially expected in terms of player numbers.

Jansen (pictured) commented on the regulator’s annual report for 2021, which was released last week and included data about player numbers, advertising and unlicensed play. In this report, the KSA noted that 634,000 online gaming accounts had been created between the vertical launching in October 2021 and the start of March.

Jansen noted that when multi-account play is considered, it suggested that the number of players may be lower than expected.

“Please note: this does not mean that there are so many players (on legal sites) in the Netherlands,” Jansen said. “An unknown number of players have an account with several providers. So there are (probably considerably) fewer than 634,000.

Missouri sports betting bill passed to state senate

A bill that aims to legalize sports betting in Missouri is heading to the state senate after it passed its final house reading yesterday (March 24).

House Bill 2556 was first introduced on January 19 and was first referred to the Special Committee on Public Policy. It was sponsored by Representative Dan Houx.

It was one of several sports wagering bills that progressed through the Missouri state legislature in March.

Connecticut sports betting and igaming revenue both decline in February

Gross gaming revenue from online casino in Connecticut came to $17.2m, down 8.5% from January, while sports betting revenue hit its lowest total for a full month since launching.

Gross gaming revenue is calculated after promotions are deducted. Before these deductions, revenue was $21.6m, down 3.6%.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation – which operates Foxwoods Casino and partnered with DraftKings for online betting and gaming – continued to lead the way in gross online casino revenue, bringing in $13.7m. The tribe made a further $46,953 in revenue from mobile-on-reservation gaming, with its own Foxwoods-branded app.

Meanwhile, the Mohegan Tribe – which partnered with FanDuel – brought in $7.8m in gross revenue.

The combined online casino revenue came on $743.9m worth of stakes, with $493.6m staked with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and $249.5m with Mohegan.

In addition, players staked $17.2m worth of promotional credits with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and $1.0m with Mohegan.

Racing Victoria selects Jones as next CEO

Racing Victoria has named sporting industry veteran Andrew Jones as its new chief executive, starting on 11 July.

Jones (pictured) is currently the interim chief executive of Netball New South Wales. He has also served as chief executive of Cricket New South Wales from 2013 to 2019 and interim chief executive of news site Racing.com.

Before this, he was general manager of strategy at Cricket Australia from 2010 to 2012, overseeing the launch of the Big Bash League in this role.

Tab NZ reports turnover decrease in February

Tab NZ has reported betting turnover of NZ$184.9m (£97.3m/€116.9m) for February, down 23.3% from the previous month.

This was also a decrease year-on-year of 1.2% and 2.3% below budget for the month.

Gross betting revenue was NZ$30.1m, a decrease of 24.7% from January but a rise of 1.1% year-on-year.

Profit for February was NZ$11.3m, down 36.5% month-on-month but up 9.7% from February 2021. This was NZ$200,000 less than the budget for the month.

Betting profit made up NZ$10.1m of the total profit, NZ$400,000 over budget, while gaming profit brought up the remaining NZ$1.2m, coming in NZ$600,000 under budget.

Profit for the year to date totaled at NZ$96.9m, down 7.5% year-on-year and NZ$800,000 under budget.

Operating expenses for the month fell by $900,000 compared to January, to NZ$9m, and fell by NZ$600,000 year-on-year.

The most successful day for horseracing turnover for the month was at the Herbie Dyke Stakes at the Te Rapa venue on 12 February, which generated NZ$538,000.

Stoixman deal helps OPAP revenue grow to €1.54bn

Greek operator OPAP recorded €1.53bn (£1.28bn/$1.69bn) in revenue in 2021, a 36.2% year-on-year increase, as the acquisition of the remainder of Stoiximan helped the business diversify its operations with greater focus on online betting and gaming.

Breaking down this revenue total by game type, lotteries were the largest contributor, bringing in €549.2m, which was 5.9% more than in 2020.

This was followed by retail betting, which brought in €283.0m, up 5.6%, as pandemic-related restrictions continued to have an impact.

“Our retail business demonstrated high resilience, with recovery ramping up, even though our stores had to suspend operations for several months and adjust to strict healthcare restrictions after reopening,” OPAP chief executive Jan Karas said. “Our comprehensive commercial plan and well-accepted loyalty programs played a key role to this end.”

Swedish regulator pens integrity deal with Sportradar

Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has entered into a new partnership with the Sportradar Integrity Services arm of Sportradar.

Under the deal, Sportradar will monitor a range of sports and competitions in Sweden and flag any suspicions of match-fixing to Spelinspektionen.

The regulator will also have the opportunity to work with Sportradar on initiatives to assess the risk of manipulation in certain sports.

“Through the information we will receive via Sportradar, we increase our knowledge of match fixing that we can use in, among other things, our regulatory work,” Spelinspektionen investigator Daniel Frisö-Grön said.

“It also gives us opportunities to expand the exchange of information with sports and the police within the framework of our collaboration against match-fixing.”

Earlier this month, Sportradar published its annual integrity report, revealing that a record-breaking 903 suspicious matches had been flagged in 2021.

Stats Perform scores extension with Chinese Super League

Stats Perform has signed a multi-year extension to its data partnership with the Chinese Super League (CSL), the top tier of club football in China.

Under the agreement, Stats Perform will serve the CSL’s event and tracking data provider, exclusively collecting tracking data using the SportVU system at the home venues of every CSL club.

Together with Opta event data, this tracking data will be used to supplement the league’s broadcast and digital channels, along with supporting partners including media, brands and sponsors.

Data will be delivered to the CSL through a range of Opta data feeds including advanced analytics data and predictive data for use across broadcast, digital and social platforms, before, during and after matches.

The new United States Football League (USFL) has become the latest organisation to back the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) ‘Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly’ public service campaign.

As an approved partner of the initiative, the USFL will promote responsible sports wagering through its broadcast, cable, streaming and social media outlets.
