Stats Perform to launch Opta Vision

Sports data and analytics company Stats Perform has announced its new live Opta Vision data feeds for the 2022-23 football season, which will deliver a new series of football metrics.

In combining Opta event data with new tracking data, Opta Vision will provide insights to professional teams.

From this the Stats Perform also aims to deliver new storyline opportunities for broadcasters and publishers.

“We are very excited to be introducing the next generation of Opta data to our customers,” said Nancy Hensley, chief product officer at Stats Perform.

“By synchronising event and tracking data and then utilising our AI capabilities to generate enriched insights, we will be empowering performance analysis departments at teams, as well as a broadcaster’s production team, to identify new performance trends and tell great stories of the game.”

The merged data also uses Stat Perform’s Qwinn AI intelligence to generate more data outputs and deliver a more personalised experience to users.

US growth helps power Sportradar revenue to €167.9m in Q1

Data provider Sportradar’s revenue grew by 30.5% to €167.9m (£142.4m/$186.4m) in Q1 of 2022, as revenue from the US more than doubled while all other segments also experienced double-digit growth.

The United States was responsible for €25.7m of Sportradar’s revenue, more than double the total from Q1 of 2021. Meanwhile, €86.7m came from rest-of-world betting solutions, up 25.1%. The supplier said this growth was “driven primarily by increased sales of higher value-add offerings”, such as managed betting services which increased 51% to €26.4 million and live data and odds services, which increased 16% to €46.8 million.

A further €45.9m, up 16.9%, came from rest-of-world audiovisual products such as live streams, due to increased content from Tennis Australia and the National Hockey League (NHL). Revenue from other segments was up 13.6% to $9.5m.

Sportradar chief executive Carsten Koerl said it was Sportradar’s highest-margin products that had helped to power its growth.

Genius Q1 revenue exceeds targets but stock-based costs mean losses grow

Data provider Genius reported Q1 revenue of $85.9m, 59.9% ahead of Q1 of 2021 and 10% above expectations, but stock-based expenses meant its net loss widened almost eightfold.

Betting technology, content and services brought in $49.7m, which was up by 27.4% from Q1 of 2021. The majority of the increase, $7.3m, was due to new customers.

Media technology, content and services experienced the fastest growth, up by 157.3% to $24.1m. This, Genius said, was “primarily driven by the acquisition of new customers in the Americas and Europe primarily for programmatic advertising services, and the inclusion of revenues from recent acquisitions”.

Sports technology and services brought in $12.1m, up 124.0%. Most of this growth was also acquisition-related, with Genius highlighting the acquisition of Second Spectrum.

Looking at a geographical breakdown of revenue, just over half – $44.2m – came from Europe, up 11.3%. The Americas brought in $36.0m, up 246.1%, while revenue from the rest of the w..

Feeding the marketing furnace

Feeding the marketing furnace

As Q1 results season gets underway, US sportsbook operators are increasingly looking to refine their customer acquisition approaches.

In the US, sports betting is everywhere. Morning commute billboards, YouTube interstitials, TV commercials, influencer posts…marketing channels are saturated with imagery and copy encouraging new bettors to join the fray.

It should be no surprise, considering the ongoing mass expansion of sportsbooks and online betting sites in the US. With every newly regulated market comes new advertising and marketing campaigns.

Ad channels are brimming with attempts to bring sports fans, curious bettors, or other newcomers into the fold. It takes a careful, well-researched touch to succeed in marketing a sports betting site, especially in the piecemeal and sometimes chaotic US geographies with varying regulatory and legal requirements.

By this point, many big-name operators have staked their claim and continue to market to potential long-term customers. There’s s..

Churchill Downs revenue hits record $364.1m in Q1

Churchill Downs revenue hits record $364.1m in Q1

Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has opened 2021 with a record-breaking performance over the three months to 31 March.

Group revenue for the first quarter of 2022 increased 12.3% year-on-year to $364.1m (£290.4m/€345.9m), a new record for the business.

Gaming was the top performer over Q1 with revenue of $179.2m, up 16.4% year-on-year, aided by capacity restrictions at its Oxford Casino Hotel in Maine, Flordia’s Calder Casino and Presque Isle in Pennsylvania.

The gaming division is set to expand further through the acquisition of Peninsula Pacific Entertainment, which adds properties in New York, Virginia and Iowa to CDI’s portfolio.

The operator’s advance deposit wagering business Twinspires followed with revenue of $101.4m, down marginally year-on-year, after a decline in horse racing revenue was partially offset by growth from its sport and casino business. That operation is being wound down, however.

CDI’s live and historical horse racing business reported a 34.8% jump in r..
