Missouri House votes to approve sports betting bill

Missouri House votes to approve sports betting bill

The Missouri House of Representatives has voted to approve a bill that would legalise sports betting in the US state.

While the vote is a step forward in the authorization of sports betting in the Show-Me State, a formal roll call vote is required in the House before the bill is sent to the State Senate for final confirmation.

House Bill 556, which would allow for retail and online sports wagering in Missouri, is being co-sponsored by Republicans Dave Hinman and Adam Schwadron, as well as Democrats Keri Ingle and Ashley Bland Manlove.

The bill was introduced to the House at the start of the year and approved last night (March 20). Following a formal roll call, which is expected to take place later this week, the bill will then progress to the Senate for further discussion.

New Brazil integrity body forms in wake of scandals

A consortium of organisations with a stake in Brazilian sports betting have announced the formation of a new non-profit Brazilian sports integrity body, the Associação Brasileira de Defesa da Integridade do Esporte (ABRADIE).

The establishment of the new body follows a number of recent match-fixing scandals in the Portuguese-speaking country, which have led to a national conversation regarding its betting laws.

Involved in the creation of the association are Genius Sports, Entain, daily fantasy sports operator Rei Do Pitaco, as well as law firms Bichara e Motta and Maia Yoshiyasu Advogados, who released a joint statement following the group’s formation.

Luiz Felipe Maia from the Maia Yoshiyasu firm argued that the association was being formed at a “critical time,” due to the pressures of the growing Brazilian market and the ongoing question of regulation.

H2 Gambling Capital: US sports betting exceeding expectations

The fifth anniversary of the Supreme Court striking down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, paving the way for legal betting in the US, is fast approaching.

Over this time there has been a wholesale reshaping of the US gaming sector, with mobile betting racing across multiple states, and a pandemic arguably accelerating rather than slowing its spread.

What next for the market?

It’s against this backdrop that H2 Gambling Capital, in partnership with iGB, is looking at what’s next. As the pace of new state launches slows, where is growth coming from?

New era for football as white paper recommends new regulator

New era for football as white paper recommends new regulator

The establishment of a new football regulator could have wide-reaching implication for the industry's relationship with the sport, according to a new white paper.

Details on the new independent regulator were released as part of a football industry white paper, which was brought about by a call for reform in the form of a fan-led review of football governance.

The review brought up a number of key issues concerning the sport, including the controversial European Super League – a proposed competition that was criticised for being elitist and exclusionary of certain clubs.

While the football white paper does not specifically mention how the place of the gambling industry will be addressed going forward, it focuses greatly on financial sustainability for clubs and efforts to “reduce harm”.

the white paper was the result of calls for a fan-led review of football governance structures

“There exist fundamental problems of perverse incentives, poor governance, and defective industry..

Massachusetts overturns affiliate ban in regulation

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has announced that it will overturn the ban on affiliates that was created in the state’s regulation.

In its open meeting today (23 February), the MCG agreed to replace the existing language in its regulation, which currently bans affiliates from the market by prohibiting cost per acquisition (CPA) and revenue share agreements.

The MGC went on to confirm that they have been working on amendments to the regulations of both licensing for sports wagering vendors as well as advertising for sports wagering advertising.

These amendments are currently still a period of consultation and will be voted on during an open meeting on 23 March 2023.

Under regulation 205 CMR 256, subsection 256.01 (3) the law currently reads: “No sports wagering operator may enter into an agreement with a third party to conduct advertising, marketing, or branding on behalf of, or to the benefit of, the licensee when compensation is dependent on, or related to, the volume ..

Expansion into new states

A material amount of sports betting gross win growth that H2 Gambling Capital has forecast is based on further expansion into new states.

H2 Gambling Capital forecasts US sports betting gross win to reach $23.2bn by 2030, and 57% of this growth is from states where sports betting is already legal, and 43% is from states where sports betting is expected to legalise in the coming years.

In terms of the importance of new potential states, California is by far the most important, although the recent ballot result means that H2 does not expect anything to pass in the state for at least another 4 years. By contrast, Ohio launched sports betting on 1 January 2023 with Massachusetts..

IBIA reports 268 suspicious betting alerts in 2022

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) announced that it reported 268 suspicious sports betting alerts in 2022, a 14% year-on-year increase.

This compares with an average of 230 alerts announced between 2019 and 2021.
